Essentiel Paysage (Essential Landscape)

Curator : Brahim Alaoui

Essentiel Paysage has been presented at MACAAL on the occasion of COP 22 in November 2016. Curated by Brahim Alaoui, it brings together nearly forty African artists whose works explore the relationship between humankind and nature in the face of environmental and sustainable development challenges. Through a route structured around five thematic sections — Nature Told, The Tree of Life, Man and the Sea, Recycle / Resist and Nature in the Making — the exhibition highlights, through powerful visual metaphors, the interdependence between humans, plant life and animals, as well as the challenges posed by climate change and the exploitation of natural resources. The exhibition’s title, inspired by a work by Aimé Césaire, underlines the importance of landscape and the natural imagination in African artistic creation.
