Outsiders/Insiders? Artists from Essaouira in the collections of the Fondation Alliances and the Fundación Yannick y Ben Jakober is a group exhibition presenting a wide selection of works by singular artists from Essaouira, drawn from the collections of the Fundación Yannick y Ben Jakober / Museo Sa Bassa Blanca and the Fondation Alliances. Bringing together, among others, works by Mohamed Tabal, Ali Maimoun, Regragui Bouslai and Abdelmalek Berhiss, the exhibition offers a sensitive and historical exploration of artistic practices deeply rooted in their local context. Through a broad range of media—including painting, drawing, sculpture, textile works, archival materials and documents—as well as previously unseen works, Outsiders/Insiders? questions notions of marginality, belonging and recognition within the field of art. The exhibition examines the dynamics that have enabled Essaouira, a small port city shaped by multiple cultural, spiritual and aesthetic influences, to become the fertile ground for an atypical creative scene, situated at the crossroads of vernacular knowledge, individual imaginaries and collective narratives. By revealing the richness and singularity of these artistic trajectories, Outsiders/Insiders? invites viewers to reconsider established categories and to adopt a renewed perspective on works that blur the boundaries between so-called “outsider” art and practices fully embedded in the cultural and social history of their environment.
