Sara Ouhaddou interrogates history through secular objects. Through investigation of their genealogies, dissection of their functions, and extrapolation of their forms, she (re)makes them in collaboration with seasoned artisans. Her approach is rooted in the desire to rewrite the connections that unite her countries of origin, Morocco and France, while also intersecting with other distant yet intimate geographies that are uniquely hers. Guided by a personal alphabet, her work synthesizes the principles of Arabic calligraphy, the evocative power of Amazigh poetry, and the precision of Islamic geometry into a pluralistic abstraction. While her works challenge technical constraints and defy scales and mediums, they primarily serve to revive an ancestral gesture. Ouhaddou excavates the previous lives of objects. Together, with the complicity of artisans, they recount stories of dominance, striving to preserve threatened traditions as if to ward off a fate homogenized by globalization. Through Display, resulting from the collaboration between MACAAL and IFA Gallery, the artist questions the role of art as a tool for economic and social development. More than commissioned works, the artist reflects on the empowerment of her collaborators. Beyond reversing the traditional commissioning protocol between artist and artisan, this exhibition aims to deconstruct the creative and productive processes inherent in artistic practice.
